Drew Kampion is a former editor of Surfer (1968-72), Surfing (1973-82), Wind Surf (1982-89), and Wind Tracks (1996-99) magazines.

He was Editorial Director for the Patagonia clothing company (1990-91), and Associate Editor for New Age Journal (1992).

He founded, published, and edited the Island Independent (1993-96), an award-winning "bioregional magazine in newsprint," serving the "maritime rainshadow" islands of Washington State.

He is the author of The Book of Waves (1989), The Art of Christian Riese Lassen (1991), and Stoked: A History of Surf Culture (1997), the number-one selling surf history. A completely revised edition of Stoked was published in 2003 by Gibbs Smith, as well as The Way of the Surfer, published by Harry N. Abrams (New York). An additional book for Abrams (The Beach House Book) is scheduled for publication in Spring 2005. A collection of Kampion's surf stories, The Lost Coast (illustrated by San Francisco artist Jeff Petersen), will be published by Gibbs Smith in Spring of '04, followed by Waves: Echoes of the Storm in the fall of '04.

He continues to write about surfing and other subjects and is a regular contributor to The Surfer's Journal, Adrenalin, Longboard, and other magazines.

Drew is currently the American Editor of the international magazine, The Surfer's Path

Married with two children (20 and 24), he lives on an island in Washington State.
